The house arrest of the president of Niger by military officials has taken much of what international media attention there was from the continuing catastrophic conflict in Sudan on the east side of the continent. But the humanitarian crisis in Sudan is growing and the fighting between military factions threatens the stability of the region – as the Niger standoff does in western Africa. President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh of the small nation of Djibouti recently was selected to chair the regional organization IGAD.

Doing Business 2019: Djibouti Jumps 55 Ranks

DJIBOUTI, October 31, 2018 – Djibouti saw a rise of 55 ranks in the World Bank World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business global rankings. This was announced in the World Bank Group’s Doing Business 2019: Training for Reform, released today. This year, Djibouti cleared the top 100 economies, sitting at 99th globally. Last year, the report ranked Djibouti at 154.

Djibouti: IMF expects growth of 7% in 2017

In 2016 Djibouti’s economy has seen high growth on the back of a public spending campaign involving several major projects aimed at improving logistical and energy capacity.

The country’s medium-term outlook is favourable, with public and private investments expected to spur further economic development, according to the World Bank. The IMF agreed, predicting GDP growth would remain steady this year at 6.5%, rising to 7% in 2017.

Djibouti seeks public and private solutions to social housing shortfall

Government authorities are looking to partnerships and new programmes in a bid to address Djibouti’s affordable housing deficit.

In mid-September President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh announced a social housing plan that will provide 20,000 units, funded by grants from multiple donors, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco and China.

While the total value of the programme has yet to be disclosed, the completed housing units are expected to cost tenants between DJF15,000 ($84.40) and DJF40,000 ($225) per month, according to press reports.
