Djibouti seeks public and private solutions to social housing shortfall

Government authorities are looking to partnerships and new programmes in a bid to address Djibouti’s affordable housing deficit.

In mid-September President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh announced a social housing plan that will provide 20,000 units, funded by grants from multiple donors, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco and China.

While the total value of the programme has yet to be disclosed, the completed housing units are expected to cost tenants between DJF15,000 ($84.40) and DJF40,000 ($225) per month, according to press reports.

Le président de la République, M. Ismail Omar Guelleh, a reçu aujourd’hui, mardi, en fin de matinée, une délégation éthiopienne de haut niveau conduite par le ministre des Affaires étrangères, M. Workneh Gebeyehu.

Au cours de cette rencontre, le chef de la diplomatie éthiopienne a remis au président Ismail Omar Guelleh un message écrit du Premier ministre éthiopien, M. Abiy Ahmed Ali.

Ambassador Mohamed S. Douale’s response to Reuters’ article and subsequent news articles on Djibouti’s termination of DP World contract

The Government of Djibouti wishes to correct certain errors in your report of March 6, 2018, concerning its recent termination of a port management contract with DP World, a Dubai company.

Djibouti exercised its contractual right to terminate the contract due to the failure of DP World to honor its contractual commitments. Djibouti’s actions were a lawful and reasonable exercise of its contractual and sovereign rights.

Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19, The Government of Djibouti announced the suspension of the all passenger flight to and from the Republic of Djibouti, effective since March 18, 2020. Consequently, the Embassy of Djibouti will suspend the issuance of Ordinary Visas Until further Notice. Diplomatic and Official visas will be processed.

L’ Ambassadeur Douale a reçu M. Éric Mottu Chef de Mission du FMI en charge de la République de Djibouti.

En effet, le Chef de Mission a remercié l’Ambassadeur pour son accueil et sa disponibilité malgré son emploi de temps chargé. Il a ensuite expliqué la récente publication du rapport du FMI concernant la consultation 2015 au titre de l'article IV sur l'économie djiboutienne qui est généralement dans la perspective économique favorable sur les années à venir grâce l'essor des investissements. Selon la prévision macro-économique, la croissance du PIB est estimée à 6,5% en 2016 similaire qu’en 2015, avec une prévision de 7% sur la période de 2017-2016.

Djibouti: IMF expects growth of 7% in 2017

In 2016 Djibouti’s economy has seen high growth on the back of a public spending campaign involving several major projects aimed at improving logistical and energy capacity.

The country’s medium-term outlook is favourable, with public and private investments expected to spur further economic development, according to the World Bank. The IMF agreed, predicting GDP growth would remain steady this year at 6.5%, rising to 7% in 2017.
